Did you know that … our tower has its own King Kong?
St Rumbold’s Tower is decorated with many gargoyles. One of them looks suspiciously like … King Kong. But how come? The First World War left St Rumbold’s Tower badly damaged. Restoration work dragged on for decades. In 1933 one of the stonemasons carrying out the restoration work went to the cinema to see the film King Kong. It made such an impression on him that he decided to make a copy of the King Kong with the woman in its grasp on the Empire State Building. The people of Mechelen have had a King Kong gargoyle ever since.
